Esteban Montilla, Ph.D.

Living Love
R. Esteban Montilla, Ph.D.

Love is a capacity and a relational practice that integrates affection, knowledge, care, and responsibility for another person’s well-being, while respecting their dignity and freedom. As a capacity, it encompasses the ability to take an interest in someone and to respond to their presence. As a practice, it takes shape through concrete participation in the relationship. What we feel is expressed alongside what we decide and do, so that intention deserves attention, as do the effects of our actions on the life of the person receiving them. The ways of loving vary depending on the relationship—whether it is a romantic partnership, a family relationship, a friendship, a work relationship, or a community relationship. In each, closeness allows different degrees and forms of intimacy.

The ten elements of love are grouped into four dimensions. The dimension of treatment encompasses kindness, compassion, and patience; the dimension of connection includes commitment, passion, and closeness. In the dimension of the other’s well-being, assistance and care constitute a single element, and respect for freedom is another. Humility and justice make up the dimension of conditions. This framework allows us to observe interrelated practices without fragmenting the person. It also allows us to recognize what needs attention within a relationship. For example, we can speak kindly while failing to fulfill our commitments.

To explore these practices, we propose the Scale of Practices of Love (EPA), a 70-item questionnaire designed for people aged 18 and older. Each participant answers while thinking of a specific relationship, such as with their partner, a friend, or a son or daughter. The scale contains seven statements for each of the ten elements, with response options ranging from 1 to 5 that indicate the extent to which each statement describes the respondent. These are self-descriptions, not measures of behavioral frequency. The responses allow us to examine how the person recognizes these practices in their relationships, without determining how much they love, comparing relationships, or drawing a clinical conclusion.

As a complementary resource, the narrative observation map invites reflection on experiences from the past four weeks, without assigning scores or levels. For each dimension, the person identifies a practice they have engaged in, describes a specific situation that exemplifies it, and identifies an aspect they wish to cultivate. The reflection is thus linked to lived experiences and opportunities to better nurture the relationship. https://youtu.be/aDYNjdViKZI?si=mddh41lHUa_bia21

Vivir el amorR.
