The Odysseus Within Me

I recognize the Odysseus who dwells within me when I set out and yet long to return; when I walk toward tomorrow while yesterday continues to move me; when I seek freedom and feel the temptation to stay within the familiar. I recognize him when my intelligence helps me and my pride complicates the path; when I hear sirens and must admit that willpower is not always enough; and when I descend into the world of the dead and realize that I cannot build the future by erasing those who are part of my story. I also recognize myself in him when I long to live fully while learning to accept illness, aging, and death. A prolonged life would lose its fullness if it were separated from love, history, and a sense of belonging.

El Odiseo que está en mí.

Reconozco al Odiseo que habita en mí cuando parto y, aun así, anhelo regresar; cuando camino hacia el mañana mientras el ayer continúa moviéndome; cuando busco la libertad y siento la tentación de quedarme dentro de lo conocido. Lo reconozco cuando la inteligencia me ayuda y la altivez complica el camino, cuando escucho sirenas y debo admitir que la fuerza de voluntad no siempre basta, y cuando desciendo al mundo de los muertos y comprendo que no puedo construir el futuro borrando a quienes forman parte de mi historia. También me reconozco en él cuando deseo vivir plenamente mientras aprendo a aceptar la enfermedad, el envejecimiento y la muerte. Una vida prolongada perdería su plenitud si quedara separada del amor, de la historia y de la pertenencia. Pero no solo me identifico con Odiseo. Hay algo de Penélope en la espera, el discernimiento y la resistencia a aceptar afirmaciones sin evidencia. Me encuentro con Telémaco mientras busco una historia que comenzó antes que yo. Conozco la experiencia de la persona extranjera que llega a una costa desconocida y la de quien es considerado extraño por hablar con otro acento. También soy el compañero que rema y desea regresar y el familiar de quien murió mientras los demás continuaron el viaje.

Discerning and Embodying God’s Presence in Human Suffering

Grief, understood as an internal reaction that involves thinking, feeling, and aspiring in the face of a relational rupture, has the power to alter the usual ways we make sense of our existence and relate to the world. Grief, then, is not a process to be overcome nor an experience requiring healing, but rather a historical reality that demands integration into our life story. This arduous and lengthy work of readjustment, reorganization, readaptation, and learning to live without the person or group takes place alongside other individuals who choose to share in our pain. The inner grief is so profound that it leads to external acts or rituals (known as mourning), through which other members of the community can show solidarity with the bereaved. It is through this empathetic and compassionate sharing that a new identity is built and rebuilt, allowing us to move forward without the crushing weight of grief. Thank you for your solidarity with our country in mourning.
