Las doctrinas del dispensacionalismo y del rapto, tal como se conocen hoy en amplios sectores del protestantismo evangélico, no forman parte del núcleo histórico de la fe cristiana. Se trata de corrientes teológicas que emergen en el siglo XIX, en un contexto de intensos cambios sociales, políticos y religiosos, especialmente en el mundo anglosajón. La configuración actual se debe, en gran medida, a la labor de figuras como John Nelson Darby (1800–1882), exsacerdote anglicano británico, conocido por ser divisivo, controlador y arrogante quien se separó de la iglesia anglicana para fundar junto a otros líderes el movimiento de los Hermanos de Plymouth, y Cyrus I. Scofield (1843–1921), pastor congregacional estadounidense sin educación teológica formal y editor de la conocida Biblia de referencia Scofield (1909).

Jesus of Nazareth’s suggestion to his disciples, “Love your enemies” (Matthew 5:44, NIV), implies a fundamental rethinking of this classification of human beings based on identity rather than on behavior. When people define the enemy by identity, they run the risk of confusing an ally with a predator simply because of the color of their skin, their nationality, their religion, or their political orientation. They might relax their vigilance with in/group members, assuming they are allies when they could actually be threats.

La sugerencia de Jesús de Nazaret a sus discípulos: “Amen a sus enemigos” (Mateo 5:44, NVI) implica revisar de raíz esa clasificación de los seres humanos basada en identidades, en lugar de discernirlos por sus conductas. Cuando se define al enemigo por identidad, se corre el riesgo de confundir a una persona aliada con un depredador solo por el color de su piel, su nacionalidad, su religión o su orientación política. Y, al mismo tiempo, se puede bajar la guardia y el nivel de alerta simplemente porque alguien pertenece al mismo grupo, considerándolo automáticamente aliado, cuando en realidad podría ser un enemigo listo para causar daño y destruir.

That suggestion went against common sense for several reasons, including that the nets used during the day differed from those used at night and that the best fishing usually occurred at night.
